Third Class living quarters were snug and amenities few but for most immigrant travelers they were an improvement over conditions at home. A family of eleven shared two of these rooms with no complaint Each of the 222 Third Class cabins were provided with heat, electrical lighting, fresh water basins and bunk beds with blankets and pillows but no sheets or pillow cases. Bathing was a low priority for most of the 700 Third Class passengers because they felt that frequent washing brought on disease. The Titanic’s defining element of luxury and grace was the spectacular Grand Staircase. It lead First Class passengers into the heart of shipboard society where the rich and richer mingled before dinner. Overhead a magnificent glass dome reflected light off oak wall paneling and elaborate gilt railings. Wide, sweeping steps and landings provided a spectacular staging area for guests to make their evening appearances. On the top landing a large carved panel held an ornate clock and at the bottom, a classical, cherub statue stood guard. You will pass both when you walk up the staircase to the First Class stateroom. The Titanic was designed to be the largest and, tallest most luxurious ship ever built. It was the newest addition to the prestigious British White Star Ship Line but was in fact owned by wealthy American financier, J.P. Morgan’s trust, International Mercantile Marine. The 18-foot scale Titanic model you’re looking at is one-of-a-kind. It was built exclusively for this exhibit by world-renowned German designer, Peter Davies-Garner from the original working drawings of Irish shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff. It took over two years to complete the model because of the designer’s meticulous attention to detail and his unwavering commitment to the Titanic. The authentic 1912 telegraph equipment you’ll see in the Marconi Room is identical to that installed in Titanic’s 24-hour communications center. It is valued at $250,000. This primitive system (by today’s standards) was the ships only link to the world and a popular means for passengers to send messages home. Two men employed by the Marconi Company worked in this small windowless room on the forward deck. Their main job was to receive and send messages by radio waves using Morse code. Traveling First Class on the Titanic placed you in a private and privileged world where separation of the classes was strictly observed. Your stateroom reinforced this sense of entitlement with its rich furnishings, working fireplace, dining table and adult living area. Separate quarters were available for children and servants. Thirty-nine suites had complete toilet facilities and parlor suites opened to private promenade decks. Luxury living at sea had its price. A one way, First Class ticket would have cost approximately $50,000 dollars in today’s money. Five children in First Class traveled at half fare as did 12 pet dogs.
